Early life and family Heritage

Mrs. Gladys Ama Ayebea Hammond was born in Suhum in 1932 to the late Opanyin Kwame Amoako Asare and the late Madam Ama Sakyibea. She was the first grandchild of the late Nana Aye Kofi, the Odikro of Suhum, and was raised in a family that valued integrity, responsibility, respect, and service to others.

From an early age, she displayed a strong character and determination that would later define her life’s journey. The values she inherited from her family and community became the foundation upon which she built a remarkable legacy.

Intelligence Beyond Formal Education

Although Mrs. Hammond did not have the opportunity to receive formal education, she was a remarkably intelligent and formidable woman. She possessed a natural ability to learn, reason, and solve problems, earning the respect of those around her through her wisdom and practical knowledge.

Her life stands as a powerful reminder that education extends beyond the classroom and that determination, discipline, and a willingness to learn can lead to extraordinary achievements.

 

Building a Career Through Skill and Hard Work

Mrs. Hammond trained as a seamstress and became highly skilled in her profession. Her dedication to her craft and keen eye for quality helped her establish herself as a respected artisan within her community.

As a natural progression from her work in fashion and textiles, she later ventured into trading. She sold cloth and other materials at the Suhum market and in surrounding towns, building a successful business through hard work, consistency, and excellent customer relationships.

She was known for her diligence and entrepreneurial spirit, carefully balancing the demands of business with the responsibilities of family life. Her ability to maintain both a thriving business and a strong family structure demonstrated her exceptional sense of discipline and responsibility.

A Remarkable Gift for Memory and Business

Among Mrs. Hammond’s many admirable qualities was her extraordinary memory. She possessed a strong retentive cognitive ability that amazed many who knew her.

Although she did not keep written records of customers who purchased goods on credit, she could accurately recall who owed her money, who had paid, and the exact balance remaining on each account. Her remarkable memory became one of her greatest business strengths and earned her a reputation for honesty, reliability, and trustworthiness.

This exceptional ability reflected not only her intelligence but also her dedication to conducting her business with integrity and accountability.


A Pillar of Family Leadership

Beyond her success as a businesswoman, Mrs. Hammond was a pillar of strength within her family. She played an active role in important family matters and was deeply involved in key decision-making processes.

Her wisdom, sound judgment, and concern for the welfare of her relatives made her a trusted source of guidance. Whenever necessary, she consulted with her uncles and family elders, demonstrating her respect for tradition and collective wisdom.

Life’s Challenges

Like many great individuals, Mrs. Hammond faced significant challenges in her later years. She developed a knee condition that gradually worsened and eventually required her to use a wheelchair to aid her mobility.

Despite these physical difficulties, she remained resilient and strong in spirit. Surrounded by the love and support of her children and family members, she continued to face life with dignity, courage, and grace.

Her perseverance during this period served as yet another example of her unwavering strength of character.



A Lasting Legacy

Mrs. Gladys Ama Ayebea Hammond spent her entire life in Suhum, the community she loved and served. Throughout her 86 years, she became known for her intelligence, resilience, generosity, entrepreneurial spirit, and devotion to family.

On July 18, 2018, she peacefully passed away, leaving behind a rich legacy and a family that continues to honor her memory. She was survived by seven children, nineteen grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Her impact extends far beyond her immediate family. The values she embodied includes hard work, perseverance, compassion, wisdom, integrity, and service, continues to inspire generations.
